WHAT IS A LYMPHATIC MASSAGE?
Lymphatic massage is a gentle treatment performed by a specially trained massage therapist to improve the flow of lymphatic fluid throughout the body. Restoring proper lymphatic fluid movement provides a range of health and wellness benefits and is a particularly important aspect of an efficient cosmetic surgery recovery.
Benefits of manual lymphatic drainage can include:
- Faster tissue healing
- Timely elimination of any leftover anesthesia or surgical medications
- Reduction of discomfort and inflammation
- Less bruising near the treatment site
- Decreased swelling
- Better blood circulation
- Less risk of infection
- Immune system support
- Visible aesthetic improvements in less time

Am I a Good Candidate for a Lymphatic Massage?
Lymphatic massage is an invaluable aftercare therapy for patients who have undergone surgical body lifts, liposuction, facial plastic surgery, and a whole host of other cosmetic procedures. Surgery isn’t a prerequisite for a professionally administered lymphatic massage either; if you are struggling with any of the following conditions, you may also be a good candidate for lymphatic massage:
Lymphedema: Lymphedema refers to swelling that results from compromised lymphatic system function. In addition to surgery, lymphedema can be caused by congenital conditions and radiation therapy.
Lipedema: The irregular or asymmetrical fat deposits from lipedema can block the lymphatic pathways. Lymphatic massage is not a direct cure for lipedema, but it can ease related symptoms.
Rheumatoid arthritis: Manual lymphatic drainage can help to reduce arthritic joint pain and swelling.
Chronic congestion: Tired of your sinuses acting up all the time? A lymphatic massage by one of our therapists can have you breathing free again.

What to Expect During a Lymphatic Massage
Unlike other types of massages, a lymphatic massage does not involve the use of any special oils or lotions. During your session, your therapist will use a calm, rhythmic motion on the skin to stimulate lymphatic fluid movement. This process causes clearing, the release of lymphatic fluid buildup, and reabsorption, the fluid’s movement back into the rest of the lymphatic system.
Your lymphatic massage will be tailored to you depending on which operation you are recovering from or why you are seeking treatment. We typically suggest 10 to 15 sessions, but we’ll be able to settle on a more precise number during your initial consultation.

What to Expect After a Lymphatic Massage
As you continue your surgical recovery, you’ll need to follow all procedural aftercare instructions as provided by your surgeon. During this time, stay hydrated and eat nutritional meals as directed to further assist the movement of bodily fluids and the elimination of toxins.
While physical results vary based on the reason you’re receiving care, most patients experience a noticeable decrease in swelling and discomfort. Visible aesthetic improvements are also common, as flushing built-up fluid allows the skin to wrap tightly to the patient’s newly enhanced contours.

Which Additional Post-Surgical Therapies Are Available?
At the office of Dr. Jason Emer, we strongly believe in giving you multiple options whenever possible. In addition to lymphatic massages, the following surgical aftercare therapies can make a dramatic difference in how quickly you heal and your final cosmetic surgery outcome:
IV Therapy
Many of our patients add one of these IV therapies, administered directly into the bloodstream to rehydrate and/or replenish the body:
- Classic: Our version of the Myers’ Cocktail, this treatment can increase your energy and help fight the sense of fatigue common after invasive procedures.
- NAD (nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide): NAD IV therapy helps to give cells and metabolic processes the energy they need when you’re on the mend.
- Primetime: Infused within 24 hours before a surgical procedure and within the first 24-48 hours after surgery, this therapy provides rapid rehydration and gives you valuable vitamins and minerals to bounce back sooner.
Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy
Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) is a passive treatment that delivers powerful effects. During an HBOT session, the patient will rest in a pressurized chamber and breathe 100 percent oxygen. Under these conditions, it is possible to increase the concentration of oxygen in the blood, which is an incredible advantage when healing, leading to shorter recovery times and a reduced risk of complications.
Hormone Peptide Therapy
One way to support the body as it heals from surgery is to supplement its supply of key peptides. Peptides are naturally-occurring molecules in the body that dictate various biological processes. If we are deficient in a specific peptide, we can experience suboptimal performance within the associated bodily systems.
Via peptide injections, capsules, or topical creams, it is possible to increase the availability of a particular peptide. For surgical aftercare, hormone peptide therapy can provide the peptide supplementation necessary for reduced inflammation and accelerated tissue repair.
Muscle Toning
Non-invasive muscle sculpting treatments during cosmetic surgery recovery allow patients to retain muscular strength and definition safely as they heal. A series of BodyTone or truSculpt® flex sessions promotes muscle growth by using bioelectrical stimulation to activate targeted muscles without straining the surrounding tissue or jeopardizing your cosmetic surgery results.
Radiofrequency Therapy
To prevent irregular scar tissue formation and enhance the effects of a cosmetic surgery procedure, radiofrequency (RF) therapy with Venus Legacy, BTL Vanquish ME, and/or BTL Exilis Ultra can be an ideal addition to a patient’s surgical aftercare plan. These advanced devices can be used alone or in combination to provide additional fat reduction and skin tightening benefits, as well as encourage smooth, aesthetic post-op contours.
How Much Does a Lymphatic Massage Cost?
The cost of lymphatic massage is affected by the particular areas of the body being treated, how many sessions are required, and other factors related to your surgery (if applicable). Combining lymphatic massage with additional aftercare therapies could also impact the overall price.
