What Is a Breast Lift?
A breast lift, or mastopexy, is a surgical procedure that can help women achieve a perkier breast profile. Breast lift surgery can also reduce enlarged areolas and address nipples that point downward or are not aesthetically positioned on the breast.
Many women experience unwanted sagging, stretching, or deflation in their breasts over time.
Whether drooping breasts are caused by aging, gravity, genetics, weight fluctuations, pregnancy, and/or breastfeeding, the condition can negatively impact a woman’s quality of life and self-confidence.
Dr. Emer and his team of talented, board-certified plastic surgeons customize each breast lift procedure based on the unique anatomy and treatment goals of each patient. Your safety, comfort, and satisfaction are prioritized at every step of the breast lift process.
Right for you?
Am I a Good Candidate for A BREAST LIFT?
Ideal candidates for breast lift surgery are healthy women who are unhappy with their breast contours due to sagging. Breast lifts are typically not recommended for women who intend to bear children, as pregnancy and breastfeeding can cause dramatic changes to the size and shape of the breasts and may reverse breast lift results.
Mastopexy candidates are often concerned with:
- A loss of breast volume and/or shape
- Flat, pendulous, or elongated breasts
- Loss of skin elasticity in the breast area
- Nipples that point downward and/or fall below the crease of the breasts
The breast lift procedure can refine the shape of the breast to a degree to create a fuller, more aesthetic contour. However, for patients who desire a significant change in the size of the breasts along with raising the position of the breasts, Dr. Emer and his team may recommend combining the breast lift with a breast reduction or breast augmentation procedure.
Breast Lift Surgery: What to Expect
Your breast lift procedure will be carefully strategized and customized to address your physical, emotional, and lifestyle needs. In your consultation, your plastic surgeon will explain all of your options for anesthesia and incision locations and will help you determine which approach is best for you.
The breast lift procedure involves four steps:
Anesthesia
General anesthesia or intravenous sedation will be administered to keep you comfortable during the procedure.
Incisions
Based on your needs and preferences, an incision will be made on each breast. Your plastic surgeon will recommend one of three incision types: circumareolar, “lollipop,” or “anchor.”
Breast contouring
The plastic surgeon will reshape the breast tissue and remove excess skin to create perkier, firmer breast contours. If necessary, the nipples and areolas can be repositioned to best complement your new breast shape. Areola reduction can also be performed during this step, if needed.
Sutures
The plastic surgeon will place sutures in layers within the breast tissue to secure your new breast shape. The incisions will then be closed to complete the procedure.
Breast Lift Recovery: What to Expect
You will receive detailed aftercare instructions that explain physical activity restrictions, how to care for your incision sites, and when to schedule follow-up appointments with the plastic surgeon.
You will need to wear a surgical support bra as recommended by your plastic surgeon to protect the incisions and support your new breast shape. You will also need to sleep on your side or back during the initial stages of healing.
Bruising and swelling can be expected for about two weeks after breast lift surgery. Pain medications can be taken as prescribed by your plastic surgeon to minimize discomfort until these symptoms subside.
Plan to take time off work and to have someone help you around the house for the first several days after your procedure. It is important that you rest to encourage optimal healing, and you must avoid bending and lifting until your plastic surgeon approves increased activities.
Breast Lift Results
You will notice a more lifted breast position right after your mastopexy procedure. As post-treatment swelling decreases and the breast position settles in the following months, your final results will be revealed.
The lifespan of the lift depends on each patient’s condition, breast tissue, genetics, weight and hormonal fluctuations, and desired results. Dr. Emer will develop a customized maintenance protocol of non-surgical treatments to help you combat the effects of the natural aging process. Energy-based skin rejuvenation and skin tightening procedures can promote optimal collagen production and prevent premature sagging in the area.

Is There a Non-Surgical Option for Lifting the Breasts?
For patients who wish to avoid surgical intervention and minimize recovery time, non-surgical body contouring authority Dr. Jason Emer can perform non-surgical breast lifts using both radiofrequency (RF) and ultrasound energy devices. Using advanced combination protocols, Dr. Emer can provide a subtle, yet noticeable lift, so patients can enjoy a more youthful appearance to the breasts.
A non-surgical breast lift may involve energy-based treatments such as BTL Exilis Ultra, Venus Legacy, InMode Forma/Contoura, and/or Ultherapy. These devices can tighten the skin in the desired area, stimulate collagen production, and produce a long-term lift. Thread lifting and/or collagen stimulation with Sculptra injections may also be recommended to lift and firm the breast area.

The Dr. Emer Difference
At Dr. Emer’s Beverly Hills medical practice, the goal is always to exceed a patient’s expectations. Dr. Emer has found that combining cosmetic procedures is often the best—if not the only—way to accomplish natural-looking, lasting improvements when it comes to breast contouring.
He and his team of plastic surgeons often recommend that breast lift surgeries be performed in conjunction with complementary treatments in order to achieve comprehensive improvements in the shape and proportions of the body. A breast lift can be combined with procedures such as a:
- Tummy tuck to reduce sagging and skin laxity in the abdomen.
- Natural breast augmentation, which uses fat grafting to provide a moderate volume increase.
- Breast implant augmentation for women seeking more dramatic and precise enhancements in volume and shape.
- Breast reduction to eliminate excess tissue to decrease the size and weight of enlarged, heavy breasts.
- Areola reduction or recentering to reposition and/or reduce the size of the areola without detaching the nipple.
- Non-surgical energy-based treatments that deliver RF and/or ultrasound energy to enhance and extend the results of breast surgery.
How Much Does a Breast Lift Cost?
The cost of your breast lift will depend on the techniques required to achieve your desired outcome. Combining a breast lift with a breast reduction, breast augmentation, or additional cosmetic procedures will also impact the price of your breast contouring procedure. Pricing details will be provided with your personalized treatment plan.
