What Is Breast Revision?

Breast revision surgery is performed to correct undesirable effects of a primary breast surgery, such as asymmetry, unnatural breast shape or position, and scar tissue irregularities. Breast revision can also be necessary when the results of an initial breast surgery are compromised due to weight fluctuations, pregnancy, breastfeeding, and/or aging.

Breast implant revision and breast revision are frequently used interchangeably. However, breast revision surgery can also refer to a secondary breast lift or breast reduction.

RIGHT FOR YOU?

Am I a Candidate for Breast Revision Surgery?

You must wait until you have fully healed from your primary breast surgery before you can be considered a candidate for a breast revision. Patients must also meet certain health requirements to be eligible for breast revision, so Dr. Rojas will need to review your medical and surgical records before determining your candidacy.

You may be a candidate for breast revision if your primary breast procedure results:

  • Were botched due to improper or poor execution
  • Have caused unanticipated discomfort, such as back and neck pain from large breast implants
  • Did not accomplish the improvements you were seeking
  • No longer reflect your aesthetic ideals
  • Left you with excessive scarring

If you suffer from any of the following, breast revision surgery may be ideal for your needs:

  • Capsular contracture
  • Bottoming out
  • Implant rippling
  • Ruptured implant
  • Malposition
  • Uniboob
  • Unhappy with shape or size of breasts
  • Wish to remove implants

What to expect

What Can Breast Revision Surgery Treat?

A revision breast surgery can address unwanted outcomes from various cosmetic breast surgeries. Complications that are commonly addressed with breast revision procedures include:

  • Abnormal contours
  • Asymmetry
  • Irregular texture
  • Capsular contracture
  • Severe scars
  • Implant malposition

Which Type of Breast Revision Surgery Is Right for Me?

The ideal breast revision procedure for you will depend on the type of breast surgery that requires correction. If your reasons for seeking breast revision include health complications, Dr. Rojas will carefully review your medical records and may request lab tests and/or medical imaging to ensure that your treatment plan will safely provide the improvements you desire.

Based on these factors, as well as a thorough physical examination of the treatment area, Dr. Rojas can develop a customized surgical plan for alleviating your medical and/or functional concerns. Dr. Rojas can expertly perform breast revision surgery to resolve unsatisfactory results from a previous breast augmentation, breast lift, or breast reduction. In some cases, an optimal outcome will involve a combination of breast surgeries.

Breast Augmentation Revision Surgery

Breast augmentation revision procedures include:

Breast implant removal

Implant removal can address complications and/or cosmetic concerns that arise after breast implant surgery. Dr. Rojas frequently performs this surgery for patients who are unhappy with their breast implants due to:

Malposition – Malposition, or implant displacement, results when breast implants migrate from their intended position. Implants may move laterally away from the breastbone if they are placed in overly large breast pockets. Implant rotation can also occur if breast pockets are oversized. Symmastia is a condition in which breast implants shift toward the center of the chest, to create a “uniboob.”

Capsular contracture – The development of excessive, thick, and hardened scar tissue around a breast implant can cause varying degrees of discomfort and changes in the way the breast feels and looks. In severe cases, the affected implants and surrounding scar tissue will need to be removed to alleviate pain and begin the process of restoring aesthetic breast contours.

Implant rupture – Breast implants are not immune to the effects of time and will become increasingly vulnerable to ruptures as they age. A ruptured and leaking saline implant will cause the breast to quickly and noticeably flatten due to lost volume. MRI scans are used to identify silicone implant ruptures, which typically do not alter the appearance of the breast.

Breast implant illness – Breast implant illness (BII) is a term used to describe symptoms of an inflammatory or autoimmune response that some patients experience after implant placement. Affected patients can experience a broad range of cognitive, muscular, and general body symptoms that may only resolve if the breast implants are removed.

Personal or cosmetic reasons – Some patients decide that they no longer want breast implants.

Breast Reduction Revision

Breast reduction surgery is intended to decrease the size and weight of large, heavy breasts. When performed successfully, a breast reduction can dramatically improve a woman’s quality of life and her self-esteem.

However, if your breast reduction results do not meet your expectations, a revision breast reduction may be recommended. You may be a good candidate for a breast reduction revision if:

  • Your primary procedure did not fully alleviate your upper body pain, skin irritation, or other physical symptoms.
  • You want to improve upon the results of your initial surgery by further reducing your breast size.
  • Your previous surgery resulted in asymmetrical breasts.
  • You have developed larger breasts since your previous surgery due to weight gain, pregnancy, or other factors.
  • You have prominent, irregular scars from your first breast reduction.

Implant Removal with Natural Breast Augmentation

Autologous fat transfer offers an alternative to breast implants for women who wish to augment their remaining breast tissue after implant removal but do not wish to have new implants placed. Natural breast augmentation with fat transfer can provide significant additional volume and improvements in contour.

Implant Removal and Replacement

Breast implant removal is often paired with breast implant replacement. This combination surgery is ideal for patients who need or desire breast implant removal yet want to maintain or update their appearance with new implants.

In Beverly Hills, breast implant removal and replacement is popular among women who choose to have their implants removed after 10-15 years when the likelihood of complications begins to rise.

However, you do not have to wait a decade or more or suffer a complication to be a candidate for breast implant exchange surgery. Dr. Rojas also performs this combination procedure regularly for patients who have had their implants for less than 10 years but discover that their aesthetic preferences have changed.
Implant removal and replacement may be right for you if:

  • You want to exchange saline implants for silicone implants or silicone implants for saline implants.
  • You want to achieve a different breast size, shape, and/or profile, such as a significant increase or decrease in breast volume and/or projection. Replacement implants can be selected to reduce the size and weight of the breasts for a more proportionate look and/or to alleviate related back, neck, and shoulder pain. Conversely, some women choose replacement implants to create more voluminous breast contours than they had previously.
  • You’ve opted to have older implants removed due to concerns about the higher risk of complications, but you want to immediately restore your enhanced breast contours. New, identical implants can be selected to replace the old devices in this case.

Fat Transfer for Breast Enhancement

Fat grafting to the breasts can be a good option for patients who are motivated to have breast implant revision surgery to address minor cosmetic imperfections or to achieve a small to moderate increase in volume. It is often possible to conceal rippling by injecting autologous fat. Fat transfer is also frequently used to refine breast implant results by filling out the upper breast for more generous cleavage.

Breast Lift Revision Surgery (Revision mastopexy)

Revision mastopexy may be necessary if your primary breast lift was botched or did not result in the lifted, youthful contours you had anticipated. If the improvements you initially enjoyed after your previous breast lift have been impacted by post-op pregnancy, changes in your weight, or other factors, revision mastopexy can help to reverse the unwanted changes.

A breast lift revision can address:

  • Sagging breast tissue
  • Breasts that have a “deflated” or elongated appearance
  • Nipples that point downward
  • Loose and stretched skin
  • Excessive scarring from primary mastopexy

How to Prepare for Breast Revision Surgery

The preparation instructions you receive from Dr. Rojas will outline the various steps you must take in the days and weeks leading up to your surgery to minimize the risk of complications.

Diagnostics

Lab tests and/or ultrasound, MRI, or mammogram imaging may be requested.

Medications

Certain herbal supplements, prescription drugs, and/or over-the-counter medicines, such as aspirin, can cause increased bleeding and should be stopped prior to your surgery, per Dr. Rojas’ specifications. You may need to modify the dose of other medications you take, as well, to properly prepare for breast revision surgery.

Smoking cessation

Patients must not smoke in the four weeks leading up to surgery and must also be prepared to abstain for the duration of the recovery period.

Another important aspect of preparing for breast revision is planning for a smooth, safe recovery by:

  • Arranging for a trusted friend or family member to drive you home after your procedure and stay with you to assist you around the house for the first 24-48 hours of your recovery
  • Notifying your employer and other relevant parties of the dates you will be away from your normal routine for surgery and a week or two of downtime
  • Stocking up on nutritious and easy-to-make meals and snacks
  • Establishing a recovery area in your home with plenty of pillows to prop you up

What to Expect During Breast Revision Surgery

Procedure details vary in relation to the type of revision breast surgery performed and the unique needs of the patient. However, breast revision surgeries tend to follow the same general format, which involves the following steps:

  • Pre-operatively, Dr. Rojas will mark the breasts, as needed, to facilitate precise execution of your surgical plan.
  • Anesthesia will be administered, so you remain comfortable during the procedure.
  • An incision will be made on each breast, so Dr. Rojas can perform the applicable surgical modifications for your revision breast lift, augmentation, or reduction.
  • Once all changes have been made, Dr. Rojas will close your incisions and apply dressings.

After he has determined the best surgical approach for your breast revision, Dr. Rojas will speak with you about what you can expect when you arrive for your scheduled breast revision in Beverly Hills.

This thorough explanation of your surgery will inform you about the type of anesthesia that will be administered, the specific incision technique to be used, the surgical adjustments to be made, and an estimate of the total surgery time.

What to Expect During Your Breast Revision Recovery

Many women experience a shorter and more comfortable recovery after breast revision surgery than after their first procedure. This is common because most secondary breast revision procedures involve small, intricate alterations as opposed to the more extensive and invasive modifications that primary breast surgery requires.

Overall, you can expect your recovery from breast revision surgery to be similar to your experience after your primary procedure. Soreness and swelling are normal in the early stages of healing, and you should plan for a week or two of downtime.

To protect the surgical sites from trauma, irritation, and other potential impediments to optimal healing and minimal post-op marks, be sure to restrict your activities as directed by Dr. Rojas. Prematurely reintroducing strenuous exercise, lifting heavy objects, or even driving can prolong your recovery and jeopardize the outcome of your surgery.

What to Know about Breast Revision Results

Depending on the type of breast revision performed and the specific corrections made, initial improvements may or may not be apparent right away. It will take several weeks of healing for post-op swelling to subside entirely, so your breasts can arrive at their final enhanced form.

Perfection is not the goal of breast revision surgery and should not be your expectation. Though there are limits to what can be accomplished with breast revision surgery, Dr. Rojas’ patients can benefit from dramatic improvements in symmetry, shape, and position.

It is possible to experience rapid relief from symptoms of breast implant illness and capsular contracture pain, though it is not abnormal if it takes 30 days or more to realize improvements in general health and wellbeing.

Your breast revision results can endure for many years if you take care to:

  • Prevent major fluctuations in your body weight
  • Consult our hormone optimization expert, so you can resolve any imbalances that might affect your ability to successfully manage your weight
  • Make regular exercise and a nutritious diet your lifestyle
  • Support strong, healthy skin in the breast area by committing to an ongoing anti-aging regimen of non-surgical cosmetic treatments for skin tightening and collagen-stimulation

How Much Will My Breast Revision Cost?

Considerations that impact the total cost of your procedure include the specific surgical techniques Dr. Rojas must use to accomplish maximum improvements. The total operating time, type of breast revision surgery performed, and applicable facility and anesthesia fees will impact the overall price.

Another significant factor affecting the cost of breast revision is the extent of the corrections and repairs to be made. Higher costs can be anticipated for procedures that are particularly involved and/or time-intensive, such as those that require extensive scar tissue excision or considerable revision of the breast pockets.
